Opera and Google Cloud Partner to Enhance Browser AI with Gemini Models

May 28, 2024 By admin Leave a Comment

In an exciting development for browser technology, Opera Limited has announced a new collaboration with Google Cloud to integrate the latter’s Gemini models into its Aria browser AI. This integration is part of Opera’s latest AI Feature Drop and promises significant enhancements in the browser’s capabilities, including image generation and text-to-voice functionalities.

The announcement, made on May 28, 2024, highlights Opera’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to improve user experiences. The Oslo-based company, known for its innovative web browsers, has incorporated Google’s Gemini model into its Aria AI, which is powered by Opera’s multi-LLM Composer AI engine. This engine uniquely allows Opera to select the most suitable AI model for specific tasks based on user needs, thereby optimizing performance and accuracy.

Google’s Gemini model is renowned for its advanced capabilities and user-friendly interface. Its integration into the Opera One browser ensures users receive up-to-date information quickly and efficiently. This partnership between Opera and Google Cloud is a significant milestone in their 20-year collaboration, focusing now on advancing generative AI within the browser domain.

Per Wetterdal, EVP Partnerships at Opera, expressed enthusiasm about this deepened cooperation, emphasizing its potential to enhance Opera’s suite of browser AI services. Eva Fors, Managing Director of Google Cloud Nordic Region, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the mutual benefits and the drive to empower AI innovation within the browser space.

Opera has been at the forefront of browser AI for over a year, incorporating AI capabilities into its flagship browsers and the gaming-focused Opera GX. Recently, Opera expanded its AI infrastructure by opening a green energy-powered AI data cluster in Iceland, featuring NVIDIA DGX supercomputing. This facility enables rapid expansion of Opera’s AI program, ensuring the necessary computational power is readily available.

The latest AI Feature Drop, resulting from the Opera-Google Cloud collaboration, introduces free image generation using the Imagen 2 model on Vertex AI and a new text-to-audio model that allows the AI to deliver responses in a conversational manner. These features are now available in the Opera One Developer version, providing early adopters with a preview of Opera’s experimental AI innovations.

Opera’s vision for the future of AI is rooted in openness and accessibility. By integrating Google’s robust AI infrastructure and models, Opera aims to empower users and organizations to navigate the evolving landscape of generative AI effectively. This partnership not only enhances Opera’s browser capabilities but also solidifies its position as a leader in AI-driven browser innovation.

Founded in 1995 and headquartered in Oslo, Norway, Opera continues to be a pioneer in web browsing technology. As a publicly traded company on the Nasdaq stock exchange under the ticker symbol “OPRA,” Opera remains dedicated to delivering unique and secure browsing experiences to its global user base.
