The photograph is a panoramic view of Porto, Portugal, looking across the Douro River toward the historic center and Vila Nova de Gaia. The dominant feature is unmistakably the Dom Luís I Bridge, the enormous double-deck iron arch bridge crossing the river. It connects Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia and was completed in 1886 to a design by engineer Théophile Seyrig.
On the left, immediately above the bridge, is the circular-domed Monastery of Serra do Pilar in Vila Nova de Gaia. Its distinctive circular church and red-tiled dome make it particularly easy to recognize in this view. The monastery sits on the elevated Serra do Pilar overlooking both the bridge and Porto, and the bridge and monastery form part of the same UNESCO World Heritage ensemble.
The photograph appears to have been taken from an elevated viewpoint on the Gaia side, around the Serra do Pilar/Jardim do Morro area. From here the bridge’s enormous central arch is seen almost perfectly side-on, while the dense historic buildings of Porto spread across the opposite bank. The contrast between the old red-tiled buildings close to the river and the much newer high-rise residential and commercial buildings on the skyline is especially visible.
